If you combine that with the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Exmoor National Park and the Blackdown Hills, you’ll certainly never be short of fresh air or things to do. Exeter

Exeter is an easy city to get around. It has an excellent Park & Ride service with free parking, or find out more about parking in Exeter city centre. There are plenty of things to see and do and places to eat and drink here. Exeter is also an excellent place to shop with some great independents. There is information for disabled visitors disabled visitors here. The University of Exeter, which also houses the Northcott Theatre, is on the edge of the city. Additionally, there are other venues for theatre and music events.

If you are interested in history, would like to go out wildlife spotting, or simply want to admire the views, there are plenty of places to visit in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Dartmoor

Film Director Steven Spielberg said “I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor.” Dartmoor National Park is a vast moorland where ponies roam its craggy landscape, defined by forests, rivers, wetlands and tors (rock formations). The area is dotted with villages, including Princetown which is home to Dartmoor Prison. Travel on the Dartmoor Line from Exeter.

Exmoor

Exmoor National Park is a unique and special place, packed full of beautiful landscapes, wildlife and history. There are wild windswept moorlands with great views, secret wooded valleys where ancient oaks trees cling to the slopes and clear rivers that rush towards the sea. Exmoor National Park is also home to some of the darkest skies in the country so it is a great place to gaze at the stars.

These areas range from highly accessible to more challenging landscapes. Exeter is generally the most mobility-friendly, with good infrastructure, transport links, and level city-centre access. Places like Mid Devon and parts of the AONBs can also be accessible, particularly around towns, canals, and visitor sites. However, more rural and protected landscapes such as Dartmoor, Exmoor, East Devon and Blackdown Hills AONB can include uneven terrain, steep paths, and limited step-free access, meaning accessibility varies significantly depending on the specific location visited. If you’re unsure, we’ll be happy to discuss individual needs and help plan suitable places and routes.

Do I need a car to visit inland Devon comfortably?

While it is possible to visit some inland Devon locations by public transport, having a car makes exploring much easier and more flexible. It allows better access to rural areas, national parks, and smaller villages where public transport options can be limited.

What a fantastic cottage in a perfect location. I would highly recommend this cottage, especially for wheelchair users as the cottage is designed to meet all requirements.

As experienced users of holiday cottages, we found the Granary to be one of the best that we have had the pleasure of using. The whole place is beautifully arranged and the welcome pack was the most extensive that we have ever found. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and we needed nothing extra in the way off equipment. The garden was well maintained and thoroughly enjoyed by our grandchildren, who visited us during our stay. The owners were very friendly and helpful without being intrusive.
